New Zealand: The game was declared objectionable on December 11 2003.Manhunt was banned in several countries was even connected to a murder, but this was later dis-proven. The game encourages players to be as brutal as possible to the enemies and spill as much blood as possible. Starkweather has a private army named the Cerberus, who take James to each location by force and he also has a man named Ramirez, to organise the gangs so they can prepare for each "hunt".ĭespite being well received by critics, Manhunt created an uproar of controversy due to it's violent nature and horror elements. James is spoken to by Starkweather through an earpiece and given instructions as he kills his way through several gang controlled locations, while Starkweather films the carnage through security cameras. The story revolves around James Earl Cash, an escaped convict of Darkwoods Penitentiary, who was freed from death row by Starkweather, on condition that he stars in a snuff film. The city is controlled by a snuff film director Lionel Starkweather, who makes films of various gang members tearing each other apart and sells the footage on the black market. Manhunt takes place in rural Carcer City, a location part of the Grand Theft Auto world and mentioned in almost every Grand Theft Auto game. This in turn adds a new twist to the stealth elements, as the player has to refrain from noises such as talking or coughing or risk creating in-game noise. When such a device is connected, the player can use the sound of his or her own voice to distract in-game enemies. Manhunt also makes use of the PlayStation 2's optional USB Microphone and the Xbox Live microphone feature. Often hunters will call for back up after spotting a corpse, making it harder. If a hunter sees a dead body, he will become aware of the protagonist's presence and searches harder. The game also contains firearms which give a more action style to the game.Ī key ability in Manhunt is to hide dead bodies. The longer it is held down, the more brutal the execution and for each weapon there three levels of execution: Hasty, Violent and Gruesome. ![]() The player can also create distractions to lure hunters, like throwing bricks and cans, hitting walls, kicking trash cans and more.Įxecutions are performed by sneaking up behind an unaware hunter with a weapon and tapping or holding down the attack button. Other minor changes in the Wii edition are more detailed environments, additional dialogue, new hunters (Sexual Deviants scene), some weapon placement changes, a new sewer execution (in Ghosts) and more animations for Daniel and Leo, especially in melee combat.Manhunt is played in 3rd person in a linear "level" style, unlike other, free roaming ariety of weapons. The Wii version is also the only one to include a brief tutorial to familiarize the player with the controls. The Wii edition includes three unique weapons (a bottle, a mace and a knife), while the other two versions have a weapon not found in the Wii game: a samurai sword. In the Wii version, the player must mimic the movements required to kill with the combination of the Wiimote and Nunchuk.Īll versions are quite similar. However, some of these killings are censored with scenes blacked out or with the camera turned away. These include explicit violence, such as strangulation, beatings, gun violence, setting them on fire and more. If not completed in time, the character's location will be revealed immediately.Īs in the first game, players can perform executions, with three styles: Rushed (white), Violent (yellow) and Ghastly (red). Hiding in the dark requires completing a quick mini-game. Players can throw objects to distract enemies or make noises in USB headsets to draw them away from their friends (PS2). There is a radar system, enemies have different levels of awareness and assassinations are best done from the shadows. The shooter requires extensive use of cover, maneuvering, and sometimes stealth to be successful. ![]() ![]() The game mechanics are largely stealth-oriented, while later levels offer more of a third-person shooter feel when more firearms become available. Although the beginning takes place inside the asylum, the action soon moves to other locations. The player has the opportunity to play two roles: that of Dr. One day, a power outage allows the patients to rebel and cause chaos in the asylum. Instead, the same game mechanics are moved to a new location, the Dixmor Asylum, where the staff prefers to beat patients and experiment on them, rather than offer treatment for their illness. Manhunt 2 does not build on the story and events of the first game.
